Marilia's Big Move

The Man with the Van Network interviews travellers about their experiences packing up and leaving home before departing on long term trips. 

Preparing for a move isn’t always easy. Marilia Di Cesare from Tippingmom.com spent over a year living and surfing in Costa Rica with her daughter. She shares her personal pre-trip experience with Man with the Van Network.

 

Yes, I did. I found a renter just before I left. The renter left after one month but I found someone else soon after that.

I left my stuff with a friend that has an attic. I left about 6 big boxes, a longboard and a bike.

 

Was the move difficult for you and your family? If so, what did you find to be the most difficult?

It wasn´t difficult to leave as we were expecting to visit new places and had all the excitement that comes with that. The most difficult part was really deciding about doing it and buying the airplane ticket. Being sure about doing it was the hardest part. After that, I did feel a bit scared of leaving our perfect little life behind, but it was also a lot of fun to prepare to go.

 

I guess I did find it difficult to give away a lot of things. I wanted to leave behind as little as possible. If I was going to be able to live for one year with what fit in a backpack, I sure didn´t need 6 boxes waiting for me.

(When I went back, I got rid of two of those boxes right away.)

 

I would give away or sell more stuff.

 

Yes. I really recommend that people make up their mind about travelling and buy their ticket a few months prior to the trip. This will leave room for organizing everything about leaving, without the extra stress on deciding where and when to go. Once you have your ticket in hand, you can devote yourself to getting rid of stuff and finding storage for the rest of your belongings.
