Bristol History and Removals Opportunities

Bristol - A City of Opportunity

The city of Bristol in the South West of England is the home of the Man With Van Network.  The city has a population of close to half a million people whilst the urban spread is closer to 750,000 people making Bristol the 8th largest city in the UK.

Bristol was built originally on the convergence of the rivers Avon and Frome next to the Severn Estuary.  The Port of Bristol was one of the busiest in the UK in times gone by, it used to be in the heart of the city, but now resides at Avonmouth on the Severn Estuary.

Today Bristol's economy is built around the aerospace industry and creative media.  The old historic docks have been redeveloped as centres of culture and heritage.

Being at the heart of the South West, the city is connected to the rest of the UK by a robust transport network.  The city is served by the M4 running east to west (London to South Wales) and the M5 running from Exeter to Birmingham.

The transport links, particularly the motorways make it easy for our Man With a Van company to serve the South West towns and cities such as Bath, Newbury, Swindon, Oxford, Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The airport and the two train stations also provide lots of collection and delivery work for our Man With Van services.

Bristol has two universities, the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.  Again these two educational institutes generate a lot of removals work for us with students moving in and out of student accommodation.

The city has over 50 Grade I buildings and over 500 Grade II.  The oldest Grade I buildings in Bristol are the St James' Priory built in 1129 and the next oldest is Bristol Cathedral and its Great Gatehouse founded in 1140.  The medieval stonework is in the main built from limestone mined from local quarries.

Despite its size the city is not represented in the Premier League with its two teams Bristol City and Bristol Rovers currently residing in the Championship and League One respectively.

One of the City's most famous landmarks is the Clifton Suspension Bridge which spans the Avon Gorge and the River Avon.  The bridge is a toll bridge, designed by William Barlow and John Hawkshaw who based their design on an earlier design of the famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel.  Attempts to build Brunel's design were halted in 1831 by the Bristol Riots, and it wasn't until 1864 that building works were finally completed, to different designs after his death.  The bridge deck is suspended from two towers using 81 matching pairs of vertical wrought-iron rods.

Today the City of Bristol is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with lots of bars and restaurants and with a thriving student population.
